BUSINESSMAN Barclay Ewart was on Wednesday hailed by the Government and industry leaders as a nationalist who made significant contribution towards nation building.

"He was very special to us all. He was truly a nationalist who believed in Jamaica and who worked hard to help in its development," Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller told the Observer at the end of the late businessman's funeral service held at the University Chapel, Mona.

Simpson Miller was among scores of family members, friends and associates who attended the service pay their last respect to Ewart, a former industry leader.

Ewart died on February 1 at age 76.

"He was a great man. He was greatness personified. He was a person who never boasted despite significant contributions he made to the society," said Minister of National security, Peter Bunting.

He was supported by former public defender, Howard Hamilton, who said that Ewart was a great athlete of his time, who later became a key member of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, the Jamaica Exporters' Association, among other private sector bodies. Ewart, he said, was a person of boundless optimism.

Meantime, family members of the late businessman called on Jamaicans to honour his by making the country a better place.

Ewart, a former government senator during from 1988 to 2004, was associated with various companies, among them Tanners Jamaica, which he founded, Alkali Limited, Industrial Chemicals, Power & Tractors, and Leder Mode.
