BRACO, Trelawny — A former member of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) was shot and killed Friday evening after he and an unknown accomplice broke into the home of a prominent businessman here and held him and his friend at gunpoint.
The police have released the identity of the dead ex-soldier as 27-year-old Jahdiek James of the St Ann communities of Union and Mile End.
Reports are that at about 7:30 Friday evening the businessman — Chris Parnell, son of former Custos of Trelawny, Val Parnell — was at his home with a friend when they were pounced upon by the two masked intruders, who were armed with handguns.
According to the police, the businessman's friend — whose name has not been released — quickly drew his licensed firearm and fired several shots in the direction of the armed prowlers. The ex-soldier fell to the ground while his crony escaped the area on foot.
The Duncans police were summoned and upon arrival James was reportedly found suffering from gunshot wounds and clutching his licensed 9 mm pistol loaded with a magazine containing 15 rounds. An expired JDF identification card bearing his name and photograph was also taken from him.
The crime scene was subsequently processed by members of the Area One Technical Services Division.
The injured man was taken to the Falmouth Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
No motive for the intrusion has been established by members of the Trelawny CIB who are investigating.
