Fire at Holland Bamboo

Thursday, July 19, 2012

LACOVIA, St Elizabeth — Approximately half-mile of bamboo was destroyed yesterday in the Holland Bamboo attraction, just west of Lacovia in St Elizabeth.

District Officer at the Fire Department Alibaster Rowe said that the brigade was alerted about 1:30 pm about the fire at the tourist attraction.

He said that investigations showed that persons were clearing land at an adjacent property when a fire got out of control and the caught the bamboo.

Rowe said firefighters from the Santa Cruz and Black River fire stations put out the blaze.

Traffic, he said, had to be diverted to a alternate route as bamboo that were burning at the root fell in the road and the smoke caused poor visibility.
