Four die in road accidents

Tuesday, January 03, 2012

FOUR people were yesterday killed and four others admitted to hospital following two separate motor vehicle accidents in the parishes of St Ann and Hanover.

The St Ann accident claimed the lives of Matthew Daye and Malcolm Shand, both of Homestead in Runaway Bay, St Ann; while victims of the Hanover crash were identified as Ian Guthrie and Michael Bowers, both of Paradise in Norwood, St James.

According to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) — the police's information arm — the St Ann crash occurred about 1:15 am along the Drax Hall Main Road. The CCN said Daye was driving a Suzuki Swift motor car, with Shand as a passenger, when the vehicle slammed into a Nissan Sunny motor car being driven by Brimsley Ambrusley of Ocho Rios. Ambrusley has been admitted to hospital in serious condition.

The Hanover crash occurred about 3:45 am when a Coaster bus that operates on the Montego Bay to Sandy Bay route reportedly collided with a Nissan Sunny Bluebird along the Tryall main road.

Guthrie and Bowers, who were passengers in the Bluebird, were killed on the spot, while the drivers of both vehicles were admitted to the Cornwall Regional Hospital.

Yesterday, the Police Traffic Department said it would be moving to intensify its education campaign to encourage drivers and pedestrian to take greater care when travelling on the nation's roads.

Last year, 302 were killed in road accidents, 17 less that the number killed the previous year.
