Front Pew with Pastor Herro Blair
Sunday, March 07, 2010
Name: Pastor Herro 'Steve' Blair
Church: Jamaica Youth for Christ
Location: 2 Acacia Avenue, Kingston 5
Membership: About 500 active volunteers
Number of years as a pastor: 14
Marital status: Married to Avriel with two children
Four things people would be surprised to know about me:
1. I am a professional sports commentator.
"I am a sports commentator. I covered sports in Cayman for 15 years, and I still get calls as I did this past Sunday when they invited me to come over and commentate on one of their league games. I do sports in general, but they call me over for football mostly. I have covered sports for ESPN and BBC. I have been to Sweden, all over the world, covering sports -- that was my life."
2. I love riding the buses to pick on the drivers.
"I take the bus occasionally. I give my wife the vehicle and I take the bus to pick on the bus drivers. My first dancehall was on the bus. I think they drive too fast and they play anything on the bus. I was sitting on the bus recently and the guy was there playing all these things about sex and everything like that and there were kids on the bus and church people. So when the bus stopped, I looked at him and I said, 'look, people are going to church and this is how you are sending them to church'. And I added, 'By the way, I am a pastor and thank you for my first dancehall'. The poor guy just burst out laughing."
3. I am a chef who never cook the same thing twice.
"My wife tells me I love food more than anything else, but I also love to cook. There are very few people who are as good a cook as I am. I take pride in my cooking. My first week here with my staff, I cooked curried ackee with shrimp and I gave them white rice with it and they were in awe. I never cook the same thing twice. If I am cooking a pasta, I have a dozen different ways to cook it and if I am cooking chicken, I have 200 different ways I can cook it."
4. I am a gifted snorer.
"My snoring is in a class of its own. I am a very gifted snorer."
