Front Pew with Frank Power

Sunday, February 27, 2011

Name: Father Frank Power

Church: Our Lady of the Assumption

Denomination: Roman Catholic

Location: Morant Bay, St Thomas

Membership: 200

Has been a priest for: 37 years

Four things that people would be surprised to know about you:

1. Jamaica gives me an Irie feeling

I love Jamaican music and that's something that many people don't understand. I love Caribbean culture; there is something about Jamaican culture and life that is very close to the Irish spirit. I really do believe that the Irish get on well in Jamaica because of our attitude to life, it's somewhat laid back. I love Bob Marley, but I must say that I find the dancehall music and the other contemporary music of Jamaica, very hard to understand.

2. Cricket matches are scheduled into my lifestyle

I love cricket to the point that I would go to Test matches and I would follow the West Indies team wherever they are, although it pains my heart at times.

3. I have to get my weekly allowance of rum

I love my rum. There is a very negative attitude towards alcohol in the Caribbean and in Jamaica, especially a negative attitude towards ministers of the gospel drinking alcohol. My thing is this, there is nowhere in the bible where it says thou shalt not drink alcohol, what it does say is thou shalt not get drunk.

4. I compensate for my lack of a family by interacting with other families

I am celibate, that's the nature of our priesthood. If I become a priest, I do not get married, I do not father children. But I love family life, I love to visit family, to visit with husbands and wives and mothers and children. Because of the fact that I don't have a wife and I don't have children doesn't mean I don't like them.
