Girl detained for allegedly poisoning family
Monday, February 13, 2012
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — Police in Guyana have detained a 14-year-old girl for allegedly lacing a family meal with pesticide after her parents forbade her from dating a 19-year-old neighbour.
Police Commander David Ramnarine said yesterday that the girl is suspected of poisoning a meal of curried fish and rice, hospitalising her parents and three siblings.
Ramnarine says the family "has been putting pressure on her to stop talking to the boy and this is how she has reacted."
The girl's 48-year-old father and 17-year-old brother are in critical condition, while her mother and two sisters are listed in stable condition.
Ramnarie says investigators expect to charge the girl after consulting with the doctors treating the family.
