KINGSTON, Jamaica – The government say it is now assessing the damage caused by island wide rains over the weekend.

The showers caused flooding in several areas and also resulted in the death of at least three people.

In one case a 19-year-old woman in St Catherine died after floodwater swept away the vehicle in which she was travelling.

“The government expresses its condolences to her family,” Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller said, adding that six other people had been rescued from vehicles in the St Catherine area.

The Prime Minister met with senior disaster emergency officials and urged residents in flood-prone areas to continue monitoring official weather bulletins.

The Meteorological Service said the broad area of low pressure, which remains just over the western Caribbean, would continue to influence weather conditions across Jamaica until late on Tuesday.

“We are expecting just isolated thunder storms mainly over hilly interior areas up to Friday,” said the acting director of the Met Service, Jeffery Spooner.
