RUNAWAY BAY, St Ann – A police constable assigned to the Runaway Bay police in St Ann, was admitted to hospital last night, in serious condition, after he was shot by one of a group of gunmen.

A civilian who was also shot and injured about five minutes earlier, reportedly by the same group of gunmen, is also in hospital. He was shot after they reportedly held him up near a plaza in Salem, Runaway Bay and robbed him of his motor vehicle.

The policeman was shot following a high speed chase along the Salem/Runaway Bay main road. A police team which was on patrol in the area, was reportedly chasing the vehicles in which the gunmen were traveling, when the vehicles got out of control and crashed near the police station.

The off-duty cop who was near the station saw the gunmen running away from the vehicles and called out to them to stop. One of the gunmen reportedly opened fire on the policeman, hitting him several times.

The St Ann police have since launched a search for the gunmen.
