PORT MARIA, St Mary — A gunman was shot and killed by police in this parish on Wednesday — Christmas Day — when he attempted to stage an early morning robbery.

According to the St Mary police, about 4:24 am Gavin Patterson, 19, of Frontier Settlement in the parish was shot and killed by the police in a community called Bamboo Tree in Port Maria.

According to the police, a constable assigned to a St Andrew North Police Division was driving along the main road when two men tried to rob him. He confronted the men and members of a police patrol, which arrived on the scene early, assisted him. The gunmen fired at the police and the police returned fire. Patterson, who was wearing a mask, was hit and a 9mm pistol, with five cartridges, was taken from him.

The matter is being investigated by the Independent Commission of Investigation.
