KINGSTON, Jamaica — Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie says approximately $350 million is available in the country’s National Disaster Fund for preparation and response as Hurricane Matthew threatens the island.
Matthew intensified Friday afternoon into a major Category Three storm, packing winds of 115 miles (185 kilometres) per hour over the Caribbean Sea, US forecasters said.
Yesterday McKenzie, who was responding to a question posed by Opposition spokesman for the portfolio Noel Arscott about the state of the fund at an emergency meeting of members of parliament and heads of relevant state agencies at the Office of the Prime Minister, said Finance Minister, Audley Shaw, would activate the fund’s committee.
“There is some $350 million in the fund but as you know that in order for the fund to be used the committee has to be activated and the minister of finance is on course to do that,” said McKenzie.
