Thursday, January 19, 2012 | 3:56 PM

LEADER of the Opposition Andrew Holness today announced the shadow cabinet and house committee chairmen at a press conference.

He said the responsibility of the shadow cabinet was created so the ministers would have to play a dual role. They will have to monitor and respond to actions of the ministries, and also play a role in devising and proposing policies to develop their various portfolios.

The spokespersons were also charged with the task of public education in carrying policy positions to the people of Jamaica.

His shadow cabinet, which is four less than the cabinet announced by Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, includes: Audley Shaw, responsible for Finance, Planning, Growth and Economic Development; Delroy Chuck, responsible for Justice, National Security, Electoral Matters and Leader of Opposition Business in the House; and Arthur Williams, responsible for Information, Public Service and Labour Leader of Opposition Business in the Senate.

Holness named Kenneth Baugh as the person responsible for Health and Quality of Life and Karl Samuda as the man in charge of Transport and Works and Infrastructure Development.

He made Edmund Bartlett responsible for Tourism and Travel Service Development, and JC Hutchinson responsible for Agriculture, Mining and Natural Resource Use.

Daryl Vaz, former Minister of Information, will manage Information and Communication Technologies and Digital Society Development on the side of the Opposition.

Horace Chang has been put in charge of Housing, Water and Environment and Shahine Robinson, Social Security and Poverty Reduction. Gregory Mair is the shadow minister of Industry, Commerce and Energy and Olivia 'Babsy' Grange will be responsible for Youth, Sports, Gender Affairs, Entertainment and Culture.

Former Mayor of Kingston Desmond McKenzie will be the shadow minister in charge of the Urban Renewal, Rural Development and Local Government portfolio, while Christopher Tufton will shadow Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Investment.

Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert will shadow Education and Human Resource Development and Holness will be responsible for Development and Defence.
