JALPA seeks right to represent Air J pilots
Saturday, September 04, 2010
THE way has been paved for the Jamaica Airline Pilots Association (JALPA) — an affiliate of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) — to seek representational rights by pilots now employed to Caribbean Airlines Limited which took over the operations of Air Jamaica earlier this year.
The Ministry of Labour said Thursday that the pilot association has made out a prima facie case for bargaining rights on behalf of the airline pilots, and advised that it would be processing the request for representational rights poll, in accordance with the regulations under the Labour Relations and Industrial Disputes Act.
BITU President Kavan Gayle said that he was expecting the ministry to compile a voters' list, which would require the approval of all the parties before a date is set for the poll.
Gayle said JALPA claimed bargaining rights on behalf of the pilots following concerns about their working conditions.
"JALPA has now done all that is required to lay the foundation for a poll, and it is now up to the airline to co-operate with the association and the ministry so that the matter can be resolved quickly and seamlessly," Gayle said.
JALPA had represented pilots employed to Air Jamaica prior to the takeover by Caribbean Airlines.
