JAMAICA Labour Party (JLP) Leader Andrew Holness says that it is his job as leader is to ensure that the party remains strong enough to win the next general election.
"Even though I am being challenged, I still maintain my duty as the leader of the party, to protect the party. I still maintain my role as leader of the party to ensure that the elections are fair. I still maintain my role as Leader of the Opposition, a constitutionally appointed position, to hold the PNP to account," Holness told the party's Area Council One meeting at the Girl Guides headquarters in Kingston on Sunday.
"I still maintain my role as leader of the Jamaica Labour Party, to ensure that the party is in a state of readiness for any election... where the PNP is right now with their popularity so low, any election that they call they are going to lose," he stated.
Holness said that he has responded to Labourites who fear that the leadership challenge could "mash up" the party, that "the ...party has enough depth of institution, has enough strength of character, has enough intelligence to avoid pitfalls, has enough management capabilities to manage an election, so that whoever wins, one thing is certain, the Jamaica Labour Party must win".
