Jamaica featured in German coffee shop ad
Friday, February 22, 2013
WITH Brand Jamaica still on a high from the priceless publicity generated by the Volkswagen Super Bowl ad, Jamaica is again being given worldwide exposure by another German company on YouTube.
A new ad by Saturn Coffee Shop featuring the Jamaican flag has generated near 380,000 hits up to last night. However, the ad is likely to create controversy, despite its attempt at humour.
Using Barrington Levy's Murderer as soundtrack, the ad shows two white young men who, while making coffee in a shop, inadvertently start a fire that ignites a Jamaican flag hanging in the shop.
In an apparent effort to prevent the fire from spreading in the shop, one of them takes the burning flag outside, throws it on the sidewalk and starts stomping on it to put out the blaze.
Other young men on the street rush to help him, but their actions are caught on closed circuit TV and picked up by a news satellite. Live pictures are beamed across the world on television stations, sparking a massive protest with demonstrators waving the Jamaican flag and posters saying "We Love Jamaica".
In one scene a large black, green and gold flag is unfurled down the side of a high-rise building.
By the time the demonstrators get to the coffee shop, the young men have put the fire out, but are obviously dumbstruck by the huge crowds, monitored by riot police outside their coffee shop.
