Police on lookout for criminals fleeing Haiti

THE police say they will be on the lookout for Haitians asylum seekers involved in the flourishing drugs-for-guns trade.
A spokesman for Operation Kingfish -- the arm of the constabulary that goes after guns and gangs -- said yesterday that persons involved in the gun-for-drugs many want to use the chaos in earthquake-ravaged Haiti as an opportunity to resurface and come to Jamaica to continue their illegal activities.
"We [the police] will be on the lookout for these criminal elements," Det Sgt Jubert Llewelyn, spokesman for Operation Kingfish told the Observer.
"This does not mean that local lawmen will not be extending a helping hand to the victims who suffered in the earthquake that destroyed sections of Haiti on Tuesday," Llewellyn said.
"We are here to help but we will be on the alert," Llewellyn said, explaining that criminals normally try to capitalise on opportunities created in chaotic situations such as the one in Haiti .
"Many criminals may see it as an opportunity to hide and at the same time extend their illegal activities," Llewellyn said.
