KINGSTON, Jamaica — More than 30 people have been evacuated to a shelter in the Kintyre area as heavy rains continue to lash sections of the Kingston community.

Residents in the hilly community who have began to heed warnings from authorities to evacuate their homes and relocate to shelters say they have decided not to wait until the last minute to leave.

However, as they follow the evacuation order the residents are now calling on authorities to provide them with food and other basic items.

"We are following instructions from the authorities and we are now at the shelter but we are calling for food to be provided for us," said one woman.

She was among a group of other citizens at a community centre in that is being used as a shelter in the area.
