SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — An alleged gunman, who reportedly attempted to rob a businessman and his wife late Thursday at Nain in south east St Elizabeth, ended up being shot dead by the businessman, police have confirmed.

Police have identified the dead man as Charles Rowe, otherwise called 'Chris' of Greenvale, just outside Mandeville in Manchester. Police said a Glock 40 pistol and ammunition were taken from the scene.

Police and residents told the Jamaica Observer that about 8:40 pm the man entered the retail store and brandished a gun declaring he had come to rob the couple.

The businessman opened fire with his licensed firearm killing the would-be robber on the spot.

Police said that at least two accomplices fled the scene in a waiting motor vehicle immediately after

the shooting.

A bystander told the Observer by telephone that three men were in the car which drove away from the scene.

Reports from the area indicated that the suspects had been seen in nearby Lititz earlier Thursday afternoon socialising at bars.
