Man with two identities remanded
Tanesha Mundle
Monday, November 26, 2012
An ex-convict who reportedly got a new identity but was discovered after he went to get a new criminal record was on Friday remanded into custody when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.
The accused, Sean Joseph, reportedly went to the tax office and submitted a forged birth certificate in the name Christopher Barington White, in applying for a Tax Registration Number (TRN).
Joseph was reportedly successful in getting the TRN which he used to obtain a provisional driver's licence, an adult driver's licence and a passport.
The accused then reportedly went to the criminal records office to get a record in his new name. However, following checks, it was reportedly discovered that he already had a record in the name of Sean Joseph and that he used a forged birth certificate to apply for the new documents.
Joseph was later arrested and charged and the documents were reportedly seized at his home by police.
On Friday, Joseph's attorney, Vincent Wellesley, in applying for bail told the court that his client was convicted in the United States and was trying to get a new life and image.
The prosecution however strongly objected bail, insisting that it was not sure about the true identity of the accused but Wellesley insisted that his client was in fact Sean Joseph.
The magistrate however refused bail stating that that she could not offer bail to an individual who had two passports, birth certificates and TRN.
Joseph is to return to court on November 30.
