‘Idiot plan that!’ - Many Jamaicans against Buggery Law review
Friday, December 23, 2011
THE pronouncement by Opposition Leader and People’s National Party (PNP) President Portia Simpson Miller during Tuesday night’s national leadership debate that a PNP government led by her would review the buggery law has set off a heated debate with many Jamaicans as well as some churches voicing strong opposition to any such move.
Observer staff reporter Kimmo Matthews yesterday sought the opinions of members of the public on Simpson Miller’s position.
‘Rastaman’
It is something that I would have to go think about, as I do not want to jump to any conclusion on what was said.
Judith Brown White: Supermarket Sales Rep
I have a problem with that decision. To carry out such a review is totally wrong. What it is promoting is totally against the teachings of the Bible.
Chevan Brown
I think it was a ploy to get votes.
Delroy Mitchell
It has been happening, not here in Jamaica only, and soon or later we are going to have to take a stance. I believe that the rights of citizens should be recognised.
Devon Campbell: Taxi Operator
Not in my cabinet! If a man a deal with him thing, mek him deal with it one side. So that means sooner or later, with this review of the law, my grandchildren can’t walk in peace.
Hubert Palmer: Security guard
We are to stop trying to put a pretty coating on the issue. That sort of practice should not be tolerated. What sort of message will that send to my little son down the road?
Chairmaine Mundle: Supermarket Sales Rep
That should never be allowed to happen. God has never created people to operate and entertain that sort of practice. Our country has a strong Christian faith and belief and that sort of practice should not be encouraged and that is what such a planned review will do.
‘Businesswoman’
Our source is God. Why are we trying to sell our souls for the almighty dollar? Jamaica is not a country that embraces that sort of practice. She is out of her cotton-picking mind and she should not sell her soul for the dollar.
Ian
It is full time we should try to move away from that sort of primitive approach and allow people to live their lives despite of their sexual orientation.
Richardo Wedderburn: Security Guard
She should have tried to come up with some different approach. I know because she is a woman she a go try balance the thing. But I believe a revision of such laws is going to affect us down the road.
Jonelle Jefferson: Secretary
I do not care what a man or woman wants to do with their life, but the Opposition needs to realise that it is Jamaica we are living in and we are not going to change our views and I think it is going to hurt her chances in the upcoming election.
Orlando Gayle: Security Guard
That is totally unacceptable. Such practice and support of such practice cannot be right at all. We burn that sort of practice. Her move or plans to review the law will certainly help to promote such practice.
Toney Bromwell: Taxi Operator
Idiot plan that. Jamaica no deal with that. A vote me feel she a look.

Let's stop being hypocritical. The gay mafia is the most powerful organization in Jamaica today. Government, media ... they are all there at the very highest level. So we can pretend all we want we're not even fooling ourselves. The woman is just being pragmatic. I don't support homosexuality, but I know if all the gays in public life were to be outed in all the parties, the country shut dung tight!!! Her response was a more honest one than the other guy's.
12/24/2011
Jamaicans wise up !
12/23/2011
Is this going to define the election rather than the myriad of more important issues? I am pretty sure the Observer will say that Portia did the right thing, after they have sufficiently milked it to death and caused mass confusion through propopganda. If you would rather a corrupt, tiefing msiogynist MP rather than a competent, honest gay MP then YOU are the problem, as your value system is out of whack. Seek Jesus. However we r not limited to either/or so its a non-issue.
12/23/2011
@Earl Davis: You seem to have missed the point about sodomy et al. Adultery and sodomy are sins and are frowned upon by God. The difference here is that no one tries to demand acceptance for adultery. This is what those who practice sodomy / lesbianism is trying to do. Most persons accept the fact that adults can do their thing. There is a difference however, when children are being told that this lifestyle is normal. We will NOT accept that!
12/23/2011
@We Care - We are not fooled by your using the Bible to hide your hatred, even when you try to be politically correct. We know that gay men don't do anything that some straight men don't do with women. Are you now going to hate everyone to ensure that you cover all the bases? The scientific fact is being gay is not a choice; God made them that way. If you have a problem, take it up with God.
12/23/2011
AS long as there is no Law allowing them to be public with their immoral lifestyle I can live with it. No Sadomite Marriage in our Country or sadomite behaviour in the public. They can easily go to America and else where with it.We must wait to see the result, or meaning of what Mrs Miller is meant by her idea of reviewing the Buggery Law. She know's no Sadomy can be officially allowed in our Country. So we do not need to get too worked up. Mrs Miller know's better. Sadomites can cont Hide:
12/23/2011
As a Straight person and a Jamaican I do not know what is written in the Buggery Law; what I will say is that as long as Government do not legalize Sadomite Marriage in our Country, I will adjust to Homosexuals having employment, because there are several Homosexuals in High offices with very advance qualification. They must have all normal rights away from expecting to be seen hugging up like real Men and Women, that cannot be allowed. They can continue beyond close doors as they are doing:
12/23/2011
if this is wath mrs.Simpson-Miller said, then it is clare that she is not qulified to lead the country,Liviticus18:22,Thou shalt not lie with mankind,as with womankind. If she thinks she has to erview that that law then it should be clear to Jamaicans that she is not qulified to lead the country to rightious govanance and prosperity, with all her other qulifications,is the the vision she has for the community she is the mp for and the vision she talks about for the rest of communities, come on now Ja
12/23/2011
All you religious fanatics talking God destroyiny us ..is he not just as dis-pleased with all the killings and be-headings? Why do christians preach hatred? why do we put other peoples business as our priority? Why not preach love and hate no one...ever thought that by doing this we can create a better country? We are so obsessed with how other people live to the point of neglecting our personal growth and developement..wake up you all and let other peoples live as long as it affect us not
12/23/2011
My fellow Jamaicans, remember that it is not the Job of the government to handle moral issues! It IS their job to protect and deliver human rights to EVERY citizen, regardless of whether you agree with their Sexual orientation. Just Saying!
12/23/2011
Along with homosexuality several other actions are outlined as sins requiring the death in Leviticus. They are sleeping with your daughter in law, sleepinig with another man's wife. cursing your mother or father. I am sure most people do not think these things warrant death. Lets leave homosexuals to God. What we need is to have stiffer penalties on people who abuse and rape our boys and girls so that pastors don't rape our little girls or diplomats don't abuse our boys.
12/23/2011
According to today’s Huffington Post, Raymond Chase is the 5th gay youth to commit Suicide in three weeks.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/01/raymond-chase-suicide_n_746989.html
There has been a significant increase in the gay suicide rate in the U.S. after the lifestyle was legalized.
The decision to legalize homosexuality in Jamaica has to be proceeded by education in tolerance and additional laws to protect heterosexual from bad behaving Jamaican homosexuals or else the murder rate will also increase in Jamaica.
12/23/2011
PSM clearly said (1) she would support a review based on consultations with constituents by their MP who would vote by conscience to keep , strengthen, soften or repeal the existing law (2) her cabinet appointments will be based on competence, qualification and integrity as she is not investigating peoples sexual orientation. I am at a loss as to what the controversy is about. Her position is eminently sensible. We prefer to childishly shout la la la la la to avoid having an adult discussion.
12/23/2011
@Authnel Reid
12/23/2011
YOU CAN TELL THAT A LOT OF SECURITY GUARDS IS HOMOSEXUAL////
All hail the voice of reason.
Seems there is little tolerance on both sides of the argument!.
12/23/2011
@Authnel Reid. Go and take your medication. I think you have lost it. Please take your prescription as prescribe by your doctor.
12/23/2011
This gay thing is against all laws. Both Jamaica's and nature. The bible is very clear on this matter, and nature says two women or men can't procreate. What are we to tell our chlidren when these people starts flaunting it in public even more? this is how it starts. Let's shut it down now and forever. And you Mr. Andre Law, i can understand you talking about BOTTOM LINE. no your ting dat.
12/23/2011
Let us state categorically that gays are not committing suicide in Jamaica due to bullying. Gays are not under any physical threat from those who hate their lifestyle in Jamaica. When upstanding Jamaicans hate a behavior, they do not think that they are God or God have instructed them to physically harm the person whose behavior they hate.
The Jamaica people must be allowed time to deal with this deeply rooted problem.
12/23/2011
nooooooo none a dat rasta sista p paper blow weh fi tru di last time dem try march hardware sell a lot of things suh sista p go back to sleep and try wake up with a different BRAIN yuh zeeeet
12/23/2011
When the woman was caught in adultery, Jesus said to her “ I do not condemn you, but go and sin no more.” Therefore, today Jesus would say the say the same words those who practice fornicating, adultery, prostituting, and homosexuality etc. – STOP SINNING! GO AND SIN NO MORE!
Sexual sins are what the devil is going to use to destroy Jamaica. So PM Andrew Holness and Madam Porita Simpson-Miller stand with God and He will stand with you. Hold HIS banner High. We are a Bible believing Christian Country. May God bless you!
12/23/2011
Please dont legalize no form of homosexual marriage in my sweet Jamaica. We should not sell our soul for $, Americans. This kind of behavior is abnormal and not relative as some extreme liberals state. Most persons in the world- over 80% dont approve of this behavior(except W.Europe) and no God fearing religion does either. Rome fell, Sodom Gomorrah fell, every country that accepts this eventually falls. No changes to the buggery law!
12/23/2011
Isn't it time that the anti-gay community think of more intelligent reasons for denying the human rights of those who don't share their sexual preferences. Must we continue listening to the ignorance of people like Daryl Vaz. Wake up Jamaica! With our heinous crimes, public corruption, criminality and incestuous pedophiles we are already in Sodom and Gomorrah. If the church's teachings on Jesus Christ were true, the church would be the last place you would find Jesus. Learn to love!
12/23/2011
I love women. But someone needs to explain to me as to why it should CONCERN me if someone else love the same sex. I really cant see why I should make it may problem. For when you think of it, it may be safer to have a homosexual ( male of female), than a gang leader who is willing to cut your head off and put put the your head at one location and your body at another'; Or a gang leader or a thief, a pedophile, living in your community. But all is entitle to their opinion anyway.Cool
12/23/2011
If she said she would tolerate it some more then that's a NEGATIVE for me. Such vague statement coming from a politician with election lurking could even mean that she plans to be stricter on buggery. I wouldn't be shocked. All the while statements are dispersed in a political sphere and then are carefully explained afterward as "this is what I really meant" "don't misquote me, I didn't say that".. You know the works.
12/23/2011
Martin Luther King jr said, " I have a dream that one day my four little children will live in state that they will not be judge by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character." I would like my children to live in county where they will be judge by the ability, moral and character and not by their sexual orientation. Jamaica needs to move from myopic view, people have a right of choice.
12/23/2011
I agree with Portia comments , all laws need periodic review like some outdated punishment for serious crimes in Jamaica. I am a Christian & believe a man is entitle to have as may wives as he wish & can afford & the law of the land deny me this right.
12/23/2011
Andre Law, well said
12/23/2011
I am on one accord with Judith, Chevan, Devon, Hurbert, Orlando and most of all Toney, Businesswoman, Jonelle, and Chairmaine. When I reflect on Sam Sharpe who said: “I would rather die upon yonder gallows than live in slavery”, I wonder what we have become. When did we get so spineless? For a few carrots dangled before us by the USA and England, we have people among us that are all too willing to sell us out. Rather than articulate a message to inspire us to rise up and work our way out of our problems we have an opposition leader that is ready to ponder to the gay lifestyle. While she is reviewing the buggery law she better be prepared to ship me back to the remotest village in Africa, because for what it is worth I am not prepared to sell my soul, and I say this with a free conscience since I am also a respecter of human rights.
12/23/2011
II. I used the term "Jamaican Christian" to one of my JAM friends just this week. I defined the term "Jamaican Christian" to him as: "A hypocrite who between about 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. (if so long) on Sundays finds himself/herself in some church, behaving as if he/she is righteous; and for the rest of Sunday and the other 6 days of the week, he/she is a Jezebel or Satan, engaging in all the sins that his/her "Bible" speaks out against and only gets riled up about gay people."
12/23/2011
It is obvious most Jamaicans do not understand the buggery law. The law speaks to heterosexuals as well, men and women are also culpable under the law. Again our ignorance on our own laws and policies drive our social biases. They seemed to have also missed the point Mrs. Simpson- Miller was trying to make. Refusing someone a job based on their sexual orientation is moronic and regressive.
12/23/2011
So, mek mi see if mi undastan dis: If we live in a racist society and the international community takes us to task for being racist, then we, as "leaders", should go the people in the racist society, or to their reps, and ask them if we should change our racist ways; or ask their reps to vote on "conscience" on behalf of the people to decide if we should change our racist ways!
.
I have pretty much given up on this banana republic called JA, as it is mired in backwardness, going nowhere fast!
12/23/2011
Again, aren't there bigger issues in Jamaica than what consensual adults do in privacy? I also find it hypocritical for people to be talking about what the bible teaches and yet have no issues (or are quite nonchalant) with the rampart crime that occurs daily. Are murder and theft not sins too?
12/23/2011
We should keep these comments and todays cartoon for the future so we can look back on them. Years ago people spoke with eloquence against allowing handicap on buses, allowing handicap kids in schools, saying it was impractical and expensive not to mention the racial divide. Let us see what the future holds.
12/23/2011
Good statement Andre! I'm sorry, you couldn't feel safe enough in your own country to simply work and live without people constantly shoving their lifestyle down your throat....how ironic huh? The same act they are afraid all the gays will do, is what they themselves are doing....
12/23/2011
STOP! misleading the Jamaican people. Portia did not say that she is going to legalize gay or anything like that. As a 21st century leader she says that she will not be peeking into people's bedroom in appointing her cabinet members. She will choose people based upon their ability to lead, not on their sexual lifestyle or sexual performances. What is hard to understand about that. If we turn on the sex police we would be surprise to see who is in the closets with hands covering their face.
12/23/2011
It's really to tell you that JA ppl R still in the old era. I never see so much outragagous objection towards buggery law review. But I don't hear any out cry for killings, robberies and raps. Yrs ago I read where in JA gays were invading prostitution spot. I didn't hear any cry out about that. I hear ppl with influence in Ja R gay. Listen up JA ppl. God not just coming to judge Gays only. He's coming to judge Adulters,Murders. Let focus on make JA fee crime society. Thank you Godd Bless!!
12/23/2011
@ Andre Law
You may not know, or care to remember, but God distroyed Sodom and Gomorroa (sp) namly because of tis practise, so he did distroy some of your kind along time ago, and he will do it again if you dont change your ways. I dont hate gay people, but I hate the lifestyle, and if you dont change, you will be distroyed. You can change, you were not made that way
12/23/2011
A great leader, leads by example. It is clear that the public for the most part is on the fence with these issues. Some are more aware, more educated than others. It is pointless taking these issues to the street, where the illiteracy rate is so high amongst us. Jamaica will continue to loose with these ugly discriminatory practices. Very bright minds, who happen to be gay (just one side of who they are), will continue to take their skills & brilliance elsewhere, where they can live in peace,
12/23/2011
YOU CAN TELL THAT A LOT OF SECURITY GUARDS IS HOMOSEXUAL. SEE HOW THEY KNOCK OUT AGAINST GAYS.THEM TRYING TO HIDE THEIR SEXUAL ORIENTATION/ PROCLIVITY LIKE SOME PREACHER DO. I WANT TO ASK THE OPPONENT OF GAY IF GAYS HAS EVER STOP FOOD FROM GOING ON THEIR TABLE. CORRUPT POLITICIANS IN THE JLPNP HAS.
12/23/2011
The buggery laws have to do with sodomy not just gay men correct? Haven't we all read the articles from women in the lifestyle section of THIS newspaper when they want advice because their husbands want to have anal sex with them? Where is the outrage/concern about men who want to do this to women? If I understand correctly, the law include the straight men as well. Why doesn't anyone concern themselves with that trend? Very intersting what people are picking an choosing to "believe in"
12/23/2011
I can see where people are conflating three words. Portia clearly said "REVIEW". Some people are hearing "REPEAL" others are hearing "REVISE".
Can we please stop the deliberate inacurate reporting. What fear can there be to REVIEW. How do we jump to conclude that an act of review means that homosexuality will be legalised ??????? Think people think ! The Reasoning is flawed
12/23/2011
LISTEN UP JAMAICA! Judge not, that ye be not judged. Portia said that she would REVIEW the law. I wish that all who are shouting out would have first consulted with their LEXICON. This is a learning moment for those who should look before they leap! I did not hear Portia say that she was going to change anything, so what are you shouting about? Leviticus 20:13 is clear on sex. Read Exodus 20:8-11, review yourselves and let he/she who is without sin, throw the first stone.
12/23/2011
I find it absolutely hilarious that all these people are calling up God and saying Christianity and Bible this, but when it comes to murder, children out of wedlock, per-martial sex, corruption and women leading a church, they don't or barely say a word. Bare in mind, all the things mentioned go against the Bible!
Also, I wouldn't be too surprised if some of these people polled had children out of wedlock or per-martial sex. Oh, the hypocrisy.
12/23/2011
I am totally against buggery and same sex relations. Its not right in our biblical teachings and our culture. That said, I think Portia gave the politically correct answer. Yes, have a look and a vote, especially in light of the recent news that the US is concerned about gay rights in other nations. If parliament and the people is against (which they will be), then the argument ends there. At least in the eyes of the outside world, the government tried but the people are against it.
12/23/2011
Now what happens behind closed doors between grown ass adults is their business!! Now, just as how there's a law against statutory rape, their should be a spin off for any homosexual act as well, however what two consenting adults do is their business. One needs to ask themselves,do you have the same disdain when it comes to murder, robberies and any other sin?!! How about adultery and fornication. There's no double standard when it comes to toleration of sin,sin is sin!!
12/23/2011
I am not for the alternative lifestyle but I have to respect people's rights. Portia did not say she was going to change the law but review it and the people of Jamaica would have a say. We are blowing this thing so much out of proportion and yet we don't make so much fuss when people are being murdered everyday. Mention murder and no one seems to care but mention gays and we all jump on the bandwagon. It is time we all look at the issues that are really affecting the country. I will NEVER accept the lifestyle but I respect the people!
12/23/2011
This is a clear sampling of just how ignorant many folks are in Jamaica. You mean to tell me that they think that gays will attack their children if homosexuality is declassified as a crime? Confounded stupidity! We are all Jamaicans and not everyone in Jamaica is a "Christian." Ian, you got it right, brother. Gay or straight, we are all Jamaicans and the law ought to leave people alone to live how they want to live in a free society. How can we be free when some among us is in chain.
12/23/2011
Today's cartoon by "Clovis" help to reinforce the homophobic society that Jamaica is and result in violence against those who might have a different sexual preference to the majority of the population. I call on the Jamaica Observer to remove this type of hatred from their newspaper, though the editor might see it as simple fun.
12/23/2011
Jamaicans i had lived in the 80s when swiping and casino was the biggest sin in Jamaica. Now a days a man a approach a woman he tells her he is a good swiper, casino law pass the last person charged for buggery law I can remember is a JLP councilor . how often has any one being charged respect for all human rights. Jamaica wake up.
12/23/2011
LOL Comrade PSM went off script (her paypa blow wheh again) .......unno si wid har!
Funny (LOL) ting media talking about Drew delving into the past.....Th gay-question posed to the Debaters was something Mr. Golding uttered. Never mind that Comrade PJoke held the same views and worse more gays had been beaten and killed under Comrade Governments than at any time in the history of Jamaica since Independence.
12/23/2011
When gays publicly push it in other peoples faces isnt that offensive Did portia did a servey among jamaicans
12/23/2011
I couldn't resist adding my 2 cents. I am a gay man and brilliant scientist who left Jamaica like many other LGBTs to find a better life in a country where I can live without people encroaching on my human rights. It is a shame that many of the surveyed call themselves Christians, yet they are wishing bad on 'God's' creations, yes LGBT are people too not aliens and if God did not want them on earth they would not be here. Bottom line is Jamaicans fear LGBT people are out to convert them, silly.
12/23/2011
Go Observer, why stop now. The Sunday Herald is the one which is biased, remember. What a worthless paper.
