Media denied access to Sally's swearing in
Jamaica Observer
Wednesday, February 01, 2012
REPORTERS who turned up at Kings House to cover the swearing ceremony for Sally Porteous as Custos of Manchester were barred entry and prevented from covering the event.
Despite displaying their media credentials to police officers manning the entry post at the Governor General's official residence reporters, photographers and cameramen were denied entry. The officers said they had strict instructions to only allow Jamaica Information Service staff entry.
Porteous' appointment has been shrouded in controversy as lay magistrates in Manchester have expressed their disapproval at her appointment and staged a walk out of a recent meeting to show their disgust. The lay magistrates have sworn not to work with Porteous.
In addition, placard bearing residents of the Mandeville also demonstrated against the appointment.
