Mentally ill inmate kills another in Tower Street prison

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- A mentally ill inmate Saturday morning allegedly slashed the throat of another inmate, who is also mentally ill, at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre.

According to a news release from the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) issued a short while ago the incident occurred about ten o’clock.

The injured inmate was taken to the institution’s health facility where he was pronounced dead by the medical doctor on duty, the release said.

Diagnosed as schizophrenic, the deceased inmatew as on a murder charge, but deemed unfit to plea.

The accused, who is diagnosed as being psychotic, was also on a murder charged and deemed unfit to plea.

The DCS said every effort is being made to contact the next of kin or relatives of the deceased and that the police are investigating the inmate’s death.

The Inspectorate Unit of Ministry of National Security and Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) will also be officially informed, the DCS said.
