PRESIDENT of the Mico University College Professor Claude Packer, who has served the teaching profession up to the highest level for more than 49 years, will be retiring in 2014.
Professor Packer became principal of The Mico Teachers' College in 1995 and was subsequently appointed as the first president of The Mico University College in 2009.
He has received numerous awards and honours for his service to education, including the Silver Musgrave Medal in 1997, for contribution to mathematics education in Jamaica, the Governor General's Achievement Award in 2003, and the Mico Gold Medal for Excellence in 2007. He also received a national honour at the level of Commander of the Order of Distinction in 2008.
Prior to taking up the position of principal, and later president of The Mico University College, Professor Packer, among other positions, served as head of the Department of Economics; lecturer in mathematics in the Faculty of Education at the University of the West Indies; lecturer at Cornell University; and external examiner for CSEC mathematics.
During his tenure at The Mico University College, Professor Packer created programmes such as the Pre-University Men's Programme, which identifies young men at risk and allows them to enter the university college at the pre-university level for academic upgrading and socialisation. He was also the driving force behind the development of The Caribbean Centre of Excellence in Mathematics Teaching, which focuses on the teaching of mathematics in schools.
"My work at The Mico University College has been the best years of my life and it is my hope that Mico will shortly achieve full university status and continue to respond to national needs," he was quoted in a release from Mico yesterday.
