Defence wants to test authenticity of recordings

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

DEFENCE lawyers representing former junior energy minister Kern Spencer and his co-accused Coleen Wright will today seek permission from Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey for three cellular phones belonging to state witness Rodney Chin to be handed over to them.

The lawyers are hoping to get the phones to their technical analyst so they can be examined for tampering.

The defence team will make an open-court submission after a failed in-chamber meeting with RM Pusey, yesterday.

Last week, Patrick Atkinson told the court that the defence team did not trust the authenticity of the recordings.

Spencer and Wright are facing several charges after Contractor General Greg Christie ruled that several irregularities were involved in the distribution of four million energy-saving light bulbs, which were a gift from the Cuban Government.

The charges against Chin were dropped after he agreed to give evidence against Spencer.
