NCU takes top two spots at Microsoft's Imagine Cup
Monday, June 07, 2010
Joseph McKinson (centre), country manager, Microsoft Jamaica Inc, receives a demonstration of the Electronic School Computer Aid for Primary Education (eSCAPE) from Northern Caribbean University's (NCU's) Team Educ.8 (from left) Trevor Williams, Trecia Thompson, Warren Robinson and Caray McKenzie.
Geared at improving literacy in primary schools, eSCAPE earned Team Educ.8 an unprecedented back-to-back victory at the Microsoft Imagine Cup, the world's premier technology competition. Another NCU team, Xormis, placed second in the competition to give Jamaica the top two spots.
In congratulating the team, McKinson said: "NCU's performance is nothing short of consistent, outstanding and exemplary. They could not have been so successful without a solid university administration, which obviously understands the importance and role of technology."
Now in its eighth year, the Imagine Cup provides students with a platform to showcase their software development and technical skills to the world's most challenging problems. It has grown into a truly global competition with more than 300,000 students from over 100 countries and regions vying for a chance to win cash, other prizes and gain real life professional experience that could help them turn ideas into real products and solutions.
The NCU team goes on to the worldwide finals, which will be held July 3-8 in Poland under the theme "Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems".
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates has said that he wished there had been an Imagine Cup when he was growing up as it gets people involved in changing the world.

Truly amazing NCU. You got first spot before and now first and second. You are DEFINITELY doing something right.
Now UTech and VTDI, you need to try and catch up or all the prospective IT students will start going to NCU instead.

NCU - the largest Seventh-day Adventist university, has clearly demonstrated over the years that in this practical academic area, they are first class.
I do believe that God is blessing their efforts and this will cause many to take note of their progress and seek to be educated there. This school shows that science and religion are not at odds, since it is God who created science.
Well done NCU (and I am a 16-year UWI lecturer) - you are the best in this area.

Big Up NCU!!! Why is it that UWI/UTech are always relying on past reputation and not getting the message that elitism is no longer relevant? The shift to software technology has gone East to India, China et al and Indian techys are getting a bagful of jobs from USA, just like China got industrialised by linking to the US. Apparently NCU hired Indian Techys to help them some time ago and this is the great result.

A wonderful achievement. Why is it that there are only a few comments on this story??? If it was a story about violence or slackness there would be ten times as many..... That shows where people would rather focus their energy.

If my memory serves me correct, this school won a similar award a few years back. This is front page material. We are truly a talented people in many areas. Nuff BIG UP's to you NCU!

congrats to the NCU team, wish UTECH would put some effort in their thing!, but then UTECH is a public university so in essence a reflection of the Jamaican governance system.

Congratulations, NCU !!
