New strategy to enhance Caricom-Europe relationship

CMC

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) -- The outline of a new strategy aimed at enhancing the relationship between the Caribbean Community (Caricom) and the European Union (EU) is likely to be presented at a meeting in Spain in May.

The Guyana-based Caricom Secretariat said that the strategy would be further discussed at the upcoming European Union-Latin American and the Caribbean (EU/LAC) Summit to be held in Madrid on May 17.

It said that earlier this month, Caribbean and EU diplomats, government officials and representatives from regional private sector and non-governmental organisations met in Barbados "to discuss the parameters for an enhanced Caribbean-EU partnership".

The Secretariat said that the ultimate goal was to launch the process of drafting a new joint EU-Caribbean strategy that "is considered necessary in light of new developments within both regions and at the global level".

"These developments include economic and financial crises, challenges related to climate change, crime and security and new geo-political interests and alignments," the Secretariat added.

It said that the meeting discussed priority areas of strategic importance for both the Caribbean and the EU, "looking at the principles for a joint Caribbean-EU strategy and the deepening of dialogue to ensure inclusiveness of consultation in developing the joint strategy".
