KINGSTON, Jamaica - The new National Minimum Wage of $5000 per 40-hour work week takes effect today.

The 11 per cent increase was met with mixed reviews when announced by Labour Minister Derrick Kellier on July 25.

Also under the new arrangement security guards will earn 10 per cent more as their minimum weekly earnings move to $7,239.

Security companies had resisted the proposed increase for their workers during consultations while the Opposition chastised the Government for the increase which it said did little to better the lives of poor Jamaicans.
