New scrap metal regulations  to be revealed Thursday

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The revised regulations for the scrap metal trade will be made public on Thursday.

According to Commerce Minister Anthony Hylton, the ministry has taken “great effort to ensure that new measures are strict, with appropriate penalties for non-compliance”.

Three approved scrap metal sites were last week taken over by the Factories Corporation of Jamaica (FCJ) ahead of the trade’s resumption.

In the meantime the ministry is advising exporters, dealers and other stakeholders in the industry to get the licenses, permits, police records and other necessary documents required to participate in trading.

All exporters are required to post a $7 million bond with the FCJ.

The minister last year said that the controversial trade could resume as early as the third week in January.
