Oil truck overturns, closing Port Royal Street

Tuesday, July 10, 2012 | 6:09 AM

THE Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is advising the public that a section of Port Royal Street from the round-a-bout near the General Penitentiary to the stoplight entering the Bank of Jamaica complex will be closed until further notice to facilitate clean up operations after an oil tanker overturned in the area last night.

About 6:00 pm the tanker overturned while travelling along Port Royal Street in the vicinity of the Jamaica Stock Exchange resulting in a small quantity of oil being spilled.

The ODPEM, the Jamaica Fire Brigade, the police and the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard responded to the scene.

The situation was contained and every effort was made to ensure that the tanker remained secured from further leaking or possible explosion, ODPEM said late last night.

Motorists are being advised to avoid Port Royal Street in the vicinity of the Jamaica Stock Exchange as well as Harbour Street. The alternative route is via Tower Street for west and east bound traffic.
