KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) today saluted Desmond Elliot veteran broadcaster and former Director of TV Programmes at the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC).
Elliot died at the Buff Bay Hospital about 11:30 pm yesterday. He was 75 years old.
For more than 30 years Elliott served the JBC as a director of several programmes, quiz master for the JAMAL quiz and point director for several sports programmes.
"Long before local programmes became a staple of Jamaican television, Elliot pushed and developed local talent for viewers. Elliot will always be remembered for his writing, producing and directing an audio tape for the local scout movement which was used to push for increased membership in that body," a release from the PAJ.
Veteran broadcaster Fae Ellington remembers Elliot as a journalist who would sing the Frank Sinatra popularised 'My Way'; on every occasion.
"In 1976 Desmond was invited to be the MC at the University of the West Indies Mona campus Carnival Kings and Queens and he invited me to co-host with him and that is how the door opened for me to be a MC and I have never looked back since," said Ellington.
At the time of his passing, he was a freelance producer of the programme, Golden Memories on PBC JAMAICA.
In marking his passing PBC JAMAICA said Elliot will always be remembered as a meticulous, knowledgeable, producer and broadcaster; a respectful and loyal friend and a stately, respectable and dignified gentleman.
