KINGSTON, Jamaica — A police team was called to the Three Miles Post Office here this morning as PATH contributors rushed the facility to collect their benefits.
A security guard at the location said officials were forced to close the gate, as the beneficiaries became disorderly and refused to use the number system in place.
"I have been here from 5:00 am waiting to collect the little PATH contribution but the security lock us out from the venue," said Thelma, a senior citizen in the large crowd.
The police said they would remain at the location to ensure that order was maintained.
PATH, the Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education, is a conditional cash transfer programme funded by the Government of Jamaica and the World Bank.
It is aimed at delivering benefits by way of cash grants to the most needy and vulnerable in the society.
PATH was introduced islandwide in 2002.
