PM congratulates J'can team on outstanding performance

Monday, September 05, 2011

PRIME Minister Bruce Golding has congratulated the Jamaican team on "the spectacular and outstanding performance" at the just concluded IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Golding said a more fitting climax to the Games could not have been scripted as the men's 4X100 metres relay team won the gold medal, setting a new world record, following on the brilliant performance of the Jamaican women in winning the Silver medal in the women's 4x100 metres relay. Golding said all Jamaicans were beaming with pride.

"Yes, there were moments of heartbreak but these were just as quickly abandoned with more crowning moments of outstanding triumph by our team members. We are all extremely proud of the team which has made Jamaica finish the World Championships in fourth place with four gold, four silver and one bronze medals.

"We look forward to the 2012 Olympics which takes place in the year when we celebrate our 50th anniversary as an independent nation, proud of the achievements of this very small nation and the continued hard work of our people here at home and throughout the Diaspora, as we continue to stamp our mark of greatness as a people in just about every area of endeavour," Golding concluded.

And Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett also extended congratulations to the team of athletes who did the nation proud in Daegu, Korea.

Bartlett said the exploits of the athletes had now made his work of marketing the destination much easier.

"I am a proud minister of tourism today (yesterday) because my job is made easier because of the power of our Jamaican people in their various fields of endeavour," the tourism minister said.

Bartlett who was speaking yesterday at the JLP's Area Council Four meeting in Westmoreland expressed confidence that next year the athletes would bring further glory to the nation during the Olympics Games to be held in London, England.

"I am saying that tourism is going to be in the centre of the activities in London so that we can continue to use the genius of our people to bring economic benefit to the people of Jamaica," he added.

Everytime Jamaican runners turn up fi work de people dem get dem monies worth. We must capitalise on this for sure, we owe those great guys that. All those strong back youths on the corner needs work fi do, we can go to the world and tell them that just as how our athlete's come to your stadiums and work hard, entertained you, make you money, and give you satisfaction, so all Jamaica is ready to give you your monies worth, if you visit, invest and come work with us, let's tell all the world this

I totally Agree no tourism is to be brought into this, the athletes must focus on sports and there training..and no disrespect Mr PM but dont sell the team to Trinidad., or anyone else for that matter , its the only thing, and a good thing, thats left for our Country.

Good words Mr Golding, we are indeed proud of our athletes. Mr Bartlett good foresight, for this is another great opportunity to highlight Jamaica as an excellent tourist destination while we have the world’s attention at the Olympics. This will be great advertisement for our country that would have cost us tremendously. We all know the importance of tourism being one of the vehicles to move our country forward. This is a good foresight by this minister.

for once in our lives can we just leave the politics out of this. the athletes did well. the PM is human and if he is pleased with their performance he is entitled to say so just like everyone else. for a country that is so politically charged; we are in a real pickle. @ MR GEORGE WATSON its not about politics all the while sir, we do have other things that define us but this time, in a positive way!

Thanks PM Golding, it is a pity Jamaicans can't congratulate you on your performance as PM. I am only wondering if by London 2012 you will be PM.

I see Mr. Bartlett is already setting the stage for himself and Ms. G to go to London for the games next year. Is there any end to these ppl's brass and effrontery?
It would be good to see that the govt ensures that our athletes get proper food while there, rather than them (govt ministers) going for a "free" tri[p at taxpapayers' expense.
Don't these ppl even have any pity on the poor and realize that we can take no more?
What do they do at the games to benefit us?
They have no conscience.

. . "tourism is going to be in the centre of the activities in London" Hold it Mr Bartlett, I don't think so. No distraction in London. You should ensure tourism plans do not distract our athletes. I am worried and hope the coaches will stick to competition protocols

Great performance by the team , they did us proud.
Still waiting for our leaders to do us proud !
Maybe we should have sportmen like these representing us in politics rather than academia's, as athletes knows what performance is about on the world stage.
Maybe then Jamaica would begin the trek towards first world economically, we are there already in sports
