PNP going after Shaw's NE Manchester seat

Wednesday, September 08, 2010

CHRISTIANA, Manchester — Finance Minister Audley Shaw has won the North East Manchester seat for the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in four successive elections since 1993.

But Opposition Senator and former Attorney General and Justice Minister AJ Nicholson believes the new People's National Party (PNP) candidate for the constituency, Val Wint can snatch the seat from Shaw in the next election, provided "there is a plan".

Addressing a lively public session of the constituency conference at the Christiana High School last Thursday, Nicholson reminded comrades that the PNP's founding father Norman Manley had led his party to its first parliamentary majority in 1955, using the slogan 'the man with the plan'.

"To win election there has to be a plan, we can't go into battle without a plan. This nuh ketchy chubby, a nuh marble and cashew, we need a plan. The candidate, constituency executive, the committee, the workers, have to sit down and devise a plan," he said.

Paul Lyn, who lost to Shaw in 2007 by 1,414 votes, assured Wint of his total support in the quest to oust Shaw and "provide the people of North East Manchester with quality representation". He also urged unity among the PNP in the constituency.

The call for unity was one trumpeted by every platform speaker. Wint pledged to "build the constituency organisation" as part of his election strategy because "without organisation this constituency won't be going anywhere..."

GW stop the foolishness. when omar was mof, all the various bodies from teacher, police and nurse signed memoranda of understanding where they deferred any raises towards the betterment of the country; the MOUs followed the "Irish model" that genius Omar adopted. Now the jlp in power all of these bodies want their pound of flesh. they are hellbent on stopping progress. Just the fact that Shaw is able to renegotiate high interest loans is better than anything omar EVER did. let AJN run vs SHAW!

@George Watson -- Obama has reminded the public at every turn that he is facing problems "inherited" from the Bush administration. Conversely, the JLP inherited the problems of teachers and nurses underpaid. The MOU was a PNP initiative -- reality teachers and nurses as well as all public sector employees deserved to be paid well but you can't make "blood out of turnips." 18 years of PNP economic mismanagement and we all expect a turn around in 2 plus years. BOJ GoV, SLB Chief etc etc!!

Audley Shaw needs to go...period! How much longer is he going to fool people. I am truly disappointed in him and the promise that he made at one of our little Moravian church 6 years ago. Audley you can fool the people but not the main Man. I am truly hurt.

Its time for politicians to focus on the good for all jamaicans instead of tearing down each other. We have a government trying to attack the perenial debt problem which stangles Ja.I am baffled beyond belief why 50 percent of proprty owners pay no taxes yearly and no enforced compliance.Pay unemployed youths minimum wages as prpty debt collectors. This revenue collected can then be used to fix roads, schools, water supply etc instead of begging loans each year for the budget. Money makes Money.

Desmond Nembhard, please tell me of the good job the MOF is doing. Tell us of the jobs he has created or set up to be created. Tell us of the money he has paid the teachers and the nurses. Tell us how he has grown the economy.
Tell us, please as we wait with bated breath. The MOF didn't know one end of his anatomy from the other when he took over and before the IMF gave him a template from which he can't deviate.
A baby could do what he does. All he has to do is follow the instructtions.

AJ Nicholson is as stupid as the comment he make. I want to see in the next election Portia, Omar, AJ, Phillip and Roger all lose them seat.

And why would the PNP not want to oust Mr Shaw? After all, he's doing a damn good job as the MOF. It makes the PNP look EXTREMELY horrible taking 2 years to do more than what they accomplished in 18.5 yrs. Oh well, the people of NE Manchester are the CEOs of this empire, therefore, they will have the final say.

The PNP has been targeting Shaw's seat from when they were in power... and failed. I very much doubt they will be successful now.
Anyway lets see how this pans out. Should be interesting.

I guess the constituency will be benefitting from massive government spoils, leading up to the next election.....To the PNP if you have such a plan, why announce it so early. Anyway its a democracy, may the best man win

I guess the comrades has finally learn how to organize, even though it took them 18.5 yrs. When politicians make promises, my stomach turns. If they had any plans whatsoever for the JA people, why is JA like this. Why is our health sector & road network in shambles? Not to mention the numbers of marauding, merciless gunmen on the loose. Boy I wish I could snap a finger & bring change to my homeland. You know honestly I really want to repatriate. Tired of living in a foreign country.
