PSOJ: Dump situation a national disgrace
Saturday, February 11, 2012
THE powerful Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) says the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) and other regulatory bodies responsible for the environment and public health must be "held accountable for their collective failure to address the issues" at the Riverton City Landfill over the years. The situation, the PSOJ said, is a national disgrace.
The group was speaking against the background of the raging fire at the dump, which has choked the Corporate Area and large parts of St Catherine with smoke.
"The PSOJ views with alarm the current state of affairs at the Riverton City Dump, which is now burning and emitting toxic smoke, affecting the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of Jamaicans living and working in the immediate area and in other parts of the city. We concur with the Jamaican Environment Trust (JET) that the situation that has persisted for decades is untenable," the group said in a release yesterday.
The group lamented the closure of several businesses because of the smoke hazard and urged the Government to adopt proposals by the Jamaica Environment Trust to deal with the problem.
