Paper products workers strike

Thursday, August 05, 2010

UNIONISED workers of the West Indies Paper Products Limited yesterday walked off the job to protest against what they claimed was the failure of the management to improve wage and fringe benefits.

"For years we have called on management for an increase and these calls have fallen on deaf ears," said Collin Carter, a spokesman for the group of approximately 30 workers who yesterday picketed the entrance to the company's Ashenheim Road, Kingston plant.

The workers said that for the past seven years, their calls for salary improvement have been ignored.

"Many workers are even operating without a pension plan," said Carter, who has been employed to the company for 30 years.

"We are demanding attention; we want answers," another worker said, warning that business would not be allowed to continue if they did not get "positive" answers from the company's management.

"The school term is about to restart and we are still not getting a full explanation; we are demanding answers," said one worker.

Company officials declined to comment on the work stoppage when contacted yesterday. One officer said that the matter would be referred to the Ministry of Labour.

In this time of recession and high unemployment it behooves us all to remember the adage, "Half a loaf is better than no loaf at all".
It's all well and good for the Unions to tell you to strike and shut down the company. But dawg nyam yuh suppa afta dat.
