Plane crashes in bay off Puerto Rico capital, 1 killed

Thursday, July 26, 2012

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A small plane crashed yesterday just off the coast of Puerto Rico as it approached the island's capital, killing the pilot, an official said.

Rescue divers found the body of the pilot, said Blanca Saez, Port Authority spokeswoman. The identity of the victim and the make and model of the aircraft were not yet available.

Police had initially said that two people were killed.

The plane was apparently on approach to the small Isla Grande Airport in San Juan when it plunged into the bay. The water is deep to accommodate cargo vessels and cruise ships and there is no sign of the wreckage.

There were no unusual sounds or smoke but the plane was flying unusually low over the bay when it suddenly spiraled into the sea, said Ricardo Figueroa, a restaurant owner in Old San Juan who witnessed the crash.
