Police find guns, ammo in West Kingston
BY PAUL HENRY Sunday Observer staff reporter henryp@jamaicaobserver.com
Sunday, July 25, 2010
A police operation in the West Kingston community of Denham Town netted six high-powered weapons and 255 assorted rounds of ammunition as lawmen sustain their drive to rid the area of illegal weaponry.
The police said that the guns — which included a Bushmaster, an AK-47, Mini-14 automatic rifles and a Beretta shotgun — along with the ammunition and 10 assorted magazines, were found at an abandoned premises in the Board Villa section of upper Wellington Street around 11:30 Friday morning.
No arrests have been made.
Hours after the find, Superintendent Terrence Bent, who heads the Area Four Police Division, said the recovery indicates that Denham Town continues to be a den for illegal weapons.
"This find is significant in that it tells us that there are more guns in the area of our operation and that Denham Town continues to be a significant part of the arsenal for the criminal gangs in the area. It's an indicator that more work needs to be done," Bent told the Sunday Observer.
The find brings to approximately 100 the number of guns recovered in Denham Town, Tivoli Gardens and surrounding areas since the security forces went on its drive to rid the area of criminality in late May.
Close to 15000 rounds have now been recovered, as the lawmen made inroads into communities that have never before seen such intense and sustained operations.
Bent said that there has been "a change in the social and legal landscape" in Denham Town and Tivoli Gardens, and warned criminals that their days of intimidating law-abiding citizens into silence are over. He said the police would not allow the communities to revert to the former order where the criminal had the upper hand.
"We are here to stay and will be making more in-roads into the community because we now have the full support of the community. Those of you in the criminal world... will not be able to influence, through terror, the lives of the people of Kingston western," Bent warned.

Great job mi head side!!! 100 guns taken off the street since the start of the operations, thats a drop in the bucket. Trust me, they are not serious about getting guns off the streets, if they were, they would have trained and be using sniffer dogs years ago.

Great job security forces. Keep up the good work; let nothing stop you from going after the criminals and those who support them.

Duh!! Is hell hot?!!!!

Good show Mr. Bent. Go after them, wherever they are and lock up who must be locked. What some of us don't realize that before a gunman snuffs out our lives he does n0t ask whether we are PNP or JLP. And those big businessmen who are commissioning the killers to do their dirty deeds, MUST know that the police is on to them and they must not resile from their duties.
Lock up the politicians of whatever stripe who gets in your way. The public is in a feisty mood.

I am very happy to hear the Police speak like this. All i want them to do is to use stay on these criminals like" white on rice" which will create the name of a movie "no where to run".This will leave the law abiding citizens with their greatest weapon" no fear" just let the Police know what is going and they take care of it. These people in Jamaica dont know what they have ,people abroad will pay anything to visit there and they let those so call dons keep them down while they get rich.

Great job! The same diligence must be continued to other perilous areas of the country that the police are very aware of. Them criminals must be put to subjection, the way they have had the innocent people for so long

JCF & JDF hit them, and hit them hard. Don't let the party of no change block your effort by not extending the State Of Emergency. Now the word is finally spoken & we know who is in bed with criminals. At least Bruce "fessed up" and crushed Tivoli. Why can't they do the same? they have the most garrison ina JA. I hope the JA people wise up & read between the lines. If not I will continue to call them MASOCHIST.

The police are doing what they have always wanted,( to flush out the thugs), but were prevented by the so called powers that the politicians. Now, it's time to turn the sensor towards those politicians and people in high places who are known to be hugging up criminals. No stone should be left unturned. The police will be critized, but they should not let up,at all. Dont be fearful of what the media, organisations that are deemed to be anti-police, or even the MPs, will say.The world is watching.

Keep the pressure on these scum-bags who are Merchants of death and destruction.
In addition, please keep a survelliance trail on the criminal aiders and abettors in this regime and the opposition Party, particularly those that have an interest in "treaty matters", and since they are not accountable to anyone.

Excellent work being done by our security forces, they must be commended and supported, they have shown determination and tenacity in their fight against these criminals. Please, no retreat keep on top of the evil.
