Police to discuss bone find with City's mayor

Friday, July 09, 2010

THE police are to discuss the recent discovery of several skeletal remains in the May Pen Cemetery in Kingston with the city's mayor Desmond McKenzie.

"I have written a letter to the mayor requesting a meeting...," Assistant Commissioner of Police Les Green told the Observer yesterday.

Green said the police, working with cadaver sniffing dogs, found the remains but could not say whether the bones were dumped in the cemetery or were from graves at the burial ground. "We cannot say at this time," Green said.

Mayor McKenzie, in the meantime, said yesterday that he would be holding a meeting with officials of the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) in light of the discovery of the bones at the city's cemetery. He declined to comment further on the matter.

Yesterday, some of the workers assigned to clean the cemetery said the bones that were found were from broken graves.

"Is not anything new; many of the graves in the cemetery need to [be] rebuilt or refurbished, and this is why you see so much of them because the place is being cleaned up and exposing the broken graves," said one worker who declined to give his name.

The KSAC started clean-up work at the cemetery last month.

People we cannot solve our crime and other associated problems by living in a constant state of denial. I can understand that there are good reasons not to completely trust the authorities, but even if a little good comes out of what they do it is still worth it. We all know that May Pen cemetery has been used as a haven for decades, and would be an excellent way to conceal dead bodies. Why cant the security forces investigate this and employ scientific methods to shed some light?

Could those bones belong to victims of crime? quite possibly but the fact is though the May cemetery has been neglected/under maintained for DECADES! This is symptomatic of our country’s continued contempt and neglect for the poor who are the predominant users of that faculty
It’s a shame we want to politicize everything and not see the bigger picture that it’s Jamaicans who are having their dead disrespected in this way

The grave site of Jim Brown, his mother, daughter, and his two sons Jah T & Chris Royal, is in immaculate condition in the May Pen cemetery. Can't the people see that the people that keep them oppressed lived in luxury, die & is buried in luxury. The cemetery was kept so bad for the dead, that it maintained a permanent & good hiding place for criminals. Mayor Mckenzie, keep the cemetery clean for the dead and crime prevention.

It look like the high profile international body mining expedition into rasta city tivoli, has flopped. and them just go over to the real body mine (may pen cemetery) and strike gold - sorry - bones

I guess My pen cemetery is the location of the mass graves we were told about. Is this what prompted the importation of dogs? LOL

How will a bone in may pen cemetery tell that the dead was killed by tivoli people LOL The whole s thing seems laughable to me

What about the Rasta City Tivoli mass graves with standing dead?

Since the dogs were imported and the media was called, I guess they had to come up with something. So off they went to the cemetery LOL

When did the search move from Rasta City tivoli to the cemetery? Who would not expect to see bones in may pen? Is this news?

What about the rasta city imported dog high profile search? Has it fizzled? So we just go across to the cemetery to keep ourselves in the media? LOL

This is a total disgrace for Jamaica and Jamaican. With all the money that we make from diaspora and tourism, where does it go?, we can't even make the dead rest in peace, we can't fix the road, we can't fix the train line,we can't do anything. Maybe it would have been better if the country was run by England, people's lives would have been much improved

The Rasta City mass grave project have borne no fruit. So off to the "bone- rich" may pen cemetery. There we can reap abundantly. LOL

Les Green started a campaign with much media fanfare. We were at first told of mass graves in Rasta City Tivoli. Of men buried alive while standing etc. Dogs were imported to unearth the gruesome discovery. For weeks tv news showed dogs and handlers in bush, pits etc. Water commission was called in etc. Rather than accepting that the result of the big hype is zilch, he now want to discuss bones in a cemetery. What is this about? Please!!! stop trying to demonize the people dem

I dont believe all these bones are from old graves. There needs to be forensic test to determine how these people died. it is no secret the cemetary was used by gunmen to bury their victims, it was used as a court and execution grounds

This is Jamaica [ we do not respect lives, are we going to respect the dead, Fat chance.
This not the first time we have seen bodies spill from shallow graves buried by the state.
