Accused in Port Bustamante arms bust remanded again
Tuesday, March 16, 2010
A man charged in connection with January's seizure of 12 high-powered weapons and more than 700 assorted rounds of ammunition at Port Bustamante in Kingston was again remanded in custody yesterday. He was denied bail on his previous court appearance last month.
The accused, Courtney Thomas, is scheduled to return to the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on March 25 where his lawyers are expected to make another bail application.
Thomas' co-accused Karen Cole and Paula Cayman who were both granted bail in the sum of $5 million last month, had their bail extended and will also return to court on the said date.
Cayman, Thomas and Cole are facing charges of conspiracy and importing illegal guns and ammunition into the country. The contraband was found in an air compressor.
It is alleged that Thomas, on January 11, went to Port Bustamante to clear goods, which included the air compressor, after being allegedly paid $100,000 by Cayman to handle the transaction.
Cole was held in Thomas' company at the port, allegedly in possession of documents to clear the goods.
