Portia puts PNP on election alert

Monday, January 23, 2012

OCHO RIOS, St Ann — Leader of the People's National Party (PNP) and Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has placed her party on election alert, urging supporters to get ready for local government polls.

"You don't know the night or the hour, yet the trumpet shall sound again, and since you do not know the night, the day, the time, the hour, month or year; saddle up, get ready, get ready, get ready," the party leader urged.

She was addressing the party's first National Executive Council (NEC) meeting since last December's general election which the PNP won, and NEC members were still in a celebratory mood.

The local government polls, which were postponed twice by former Prime Minister Bruce Golding, are constitutionally due by March 31.

"I heard the leader of the opposition appealing to the Jamaican people that they must balance what... how can you balance 42 to 21... by saying to the people since you vote for them for central government give us local government, not a thing don't go like that," Simpson Miller said.

"I'm sending a message from this platform to my son today, and I love my son Andrew. I regard myself as his second mom, a sending him a message, Andrew, I'm going for all that I can get in every constituency, in every parish, in every division. It is liberation time now; this is people power time," the PNP leader said.

"This time is about restoring hope to the people. We must be sober in victory, we must be humble in leadership; we must be credible, we must consult the people; we must listen to the people, we must be respectful to the people, we must be respectful to the media and to the public servants."

She encouraged the party workers not to become complacent, but to continue the work on the ground to ensure that the party secures victory at the local level.
