GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – A 41-year-old man who had been in prison for five years awaiting trial for murder, has committed suicide, according to a statement issued by the Guyana Prison Service (GPS).

It said that the body of Deodat Sookhoo, “was found hanging with a bed sheet from the ventilation above his cell door” over the weekend.

The GPS said that the police were immediately informed of the incident and an investigation launched, but detailed the death as “an apparent suicide in the Main Prison Block at the New Amsterdam Prison”.

Sookhoo, who had been in prison since 2007, was committed to stand trial for murder last month, the GPS said without giving further details.
