Public sector agencies given 24-hour deadline to mount challenges

Parliamentary committee awaiting union response

PUBLIC sector agencies whose future the Public Sector Transformation Unit (PSTU) has determined via recommendations contained in a Green Paper to the Government, have 24 hours to indicate to Parliament whether they will respond to the recommendations.

The Public Administration and Appropriations Committee (PAAC), which is hearing the submissions from the affected agencies, say they must indicate by Friday, that they wish to challenge the recommendations.

PAAC chairman Dr Wykeham McNeil said today that he wants to close the hearings next Wednesday.

"I am very surprised that we have heard no responses from the trade union, because it seems to me that this is something you cannot conclude without the unions having an input," McNeil said.

Parliament must be notified by 4:00 pm on Friday.

Yesterday, the PAAC heard from six agencies whose principals all indicated that recommendations about their future have been made without any consultation from the PSTU.

McNeil said the PSTU had promised that consultations would be done with all the related agencies before a decision about their future was made.
