Rasta gets 2 years for weed-filled pineapples

A Rastafarian man who was caught trying to smuggle a little over 20 pounds of ganja to England hidden in pineapples and dasheens was sentenced to two years in prison Tuesday.
Jermaine St John, a Jamaican who is living in England, was also fined $191,800 by Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey after he pleaded guilty to drug charges in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court. If the fine is not paid he will spend a further six months in prison.
St John was ordered to pay $15,000 for possession of ganja, $65,200 for dealing in ganja and $116,000 for taking steps to export ganja or serve six months in prison on each charge.
However, the judge ruled that the sentences are to run concurrent but consecutive to the two-year sentence if the fines are not paid.
St John was also charged for conspiracy to export ganja, however, no evidence was offered on that charge by the prosecution.
Before he was sentenced, St John told the court that he did not have anything to say before the sentence was passed but later begged the magistrate for leniency after she told him that it was in his best interest to tell the court why he should not be sent to prison.
St John was arrested at the Norman Manley International Airport where the drugs were found in five pineapples and 16 dasheens in his luggage after it was x-rayed.
The drugs weighed 20 pounds and six ounces.
