RESIDENTS of Camp Street in Harmony Vale, St Ann, on Monday handed over to the Claremont police a home-made firearm which they managed to seize from a gunman.

The police reported yesterday that the gunman, about 5:15 pm, brandished the firearm and fired a shot at a man in the community.

Members of the community, upon hearing the explosion, went in search of the gunman, disarmed him, after which they summoned the police and handed the firearm over to them. The gunman, however, escaped.

The police also reported yesterday that one 9mm Browning pistol was seized in Salt Spring, St James, on Monday.

The Montego Hills police said about 3:30 pm lawmen were on patrol in the area when a man was seen acting suspiciously. He was accosted, searched and the weapon taken from him.

His identity is being withheld pending further investigations.
