Smoke from city dump chokes communities

Sunday, February 14, 2010

THERE was no relief in sight yesterday for residents in the Kingston 20 area, and beyond, affected by thick smoke billowing from the Riverton City dump, sections of which caught fire on Friday afternoon.

Executive director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) Joan Gordon-Webley told the Sunday Observer yesterday that every effort was being made to control the smoke, but she was unable to say how soon.

"One of our challenges is the smoke. We are working day and night to get things under control, [but] I cannot say now how soon the smoke will subside," Gordon-Webley said.

She also noted that the fire units battling the blaze suffered a setback, as two heavy duty vehicles instrumental to the exercise broke down and had to be replaced.

Gordon-Webley apologised for the inconvenience caused by the fire, which has become an irritating fixture.

She was unable to say if Friday's fire was deliberately started.

The NSWMA, in a release Friday, advised residents in the immediate and surrounding communities to take the necessary precautions to minimise the effects that the fire and smoke may have on their health. -- Paul Henry
