Secret swearing in of Sally boosts controversy — PAJ
Jamaica Observer
Wednesday, February 01, 2012
THE Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) expressed concern over the decision to block journalists from covering the official installation of Custos Sally Porteous this morning.
"This ‘secret’ ceremony emphasises the controversy surrounding the appointment and gives the impression that the authorities lack confidence in their own decision, despite having sent out a media advisory in advance of the staging," the PAJ said in a release today.
"The absence of independent media means that only the government’s perspective, through the state-owned Jamaica Information Service, will be available to the public. This trend, if allowed to continue, speaks to information control, which cannot be acceptable in any democracy," the PAJ said.
