Cops removed after man held on extradition warrant released
Sunday, March 14, 2010
THE mysterious release of Eaton Evans, the Jamaican who was being held for extradition to the United States, has resulted in the removal of several cops from their post at the Half-Way-Tree Police Station.
Head of the St Andrew Central Police Division, Derrick Knight, told the Sunday Observer that the cops assigned to the holding area of the station were removed to facilitate "a transparent investigation into the matter".
Evans, who is believed to be a music promoter, is reportedly wanted by the United States Government on drug-trafficking charges.
He last appeared before the Half-Way-Tree Court two weeks ago where he was freed of local drug charges, but remanded on the extradition warrant.
A foul-up by police personnel in the holding area led to him being released.
"We are following a number of leads into this matter and we are still searching for this man," said Knight.
US prosecutors claim Evans and another Jamaican, Claude Sayers, were members of a drug network which shipped illegal drugs into the United States. It is alleged that on March 15, 1998, US law enforcement agents intercepted a shipment of cocaine and ganja on an Air Jamaica flight at the Fort Lauderdale International Airport.
US authorities say that Sayers and Evans were fingered as suspects in relation to the shipment.
A US grand jury issued an indictment for their arrests on March 13, 2003.

The Picture which is not clear to me, is 'if Mr. Coke ordered a shipment of Guns from a dealer in America, and this dealer is a licenced Gun Dealer, then he would not have a problem. The Man who import the Weapons would have a problen, because he have no import licence. This would land the importer into a problem with his Government.. 'If the dealer who ship's them have no authority to do so, then I would assume that we would need his extradition to Jamaica. But the public just can't know what really is the fact. Our Government must deal with our problem, because it seems like this extradition treaty is a ONE WAY mission..To America Only!!

TG,
I might sound like a wrong doer, but please I am not. The Police seems to have a reason for allowing this man to go free. They konw's more than us. This is a big surprise, I've never heard of the police releasing a man from Jail in this manner..The news have not mentioned that he escaped from Custody.
No the cops have never done a good Job. but we do not know the circumstances surrounding Evans extradition.
Suppose they know he was unfairly dealt with!! they might just be giving him a second Chance to appeal. Look at it again my brothers, he is wanted for shipping illegal drugs into the United States........Those who shiped the Guns from America to our Country, should be wanted by our Authorities, is there any request made by our Government for their Extradition to Jamaica? America have all the evidence that our Guy have imported Guns..very Bad, but who sent the Shipment is just as Bad: Very Complex situation.

Mr Golding and his ministers will have to look into this matter carefully the same as he is doing with the DUDUS
Case. The Police have done a very good Job. we want's to know if there is a breach of Mr. Evans Constitutional rights _/_/_/_/
Seems like:
A. He was falsely accused went to court and was set free.
B. Ordered held on another matter and the cops through their keystone corps like bungling set him free.
Conclusion: His constitutional rights were upheld and the cops did not do a good jobs either way.
I think Mr. Golding can be held blameless in this case.

Thank God that the effluent is being cleaned up. How long could we have carried on with such high levels of corruption? Pity the US didn't step in before during the 18 year period when corruption was being more watered and fed by any administration than any time before. But who cares which administration is punished? We need a new set of leaders and a new template for governance in this country.
I thank the US government, warts and all, for attempting to level the playing firld in our diseased society. Corruption is commonplace in all countries, but people are usually punished when found out. Not so in our country, where they are almost revered when they get away with wrongdoing. Those who decry the US for its actions had better realize that we cannot clean up this nation ourselves with revot taking place, so they had better stand back and allow the mess to be cleaned up for us!
