Shrimps said found in tin of sardines

Wednesday, September 01, 2010

ST MARGARET'S BAY, Portland — Novelette Ellis says she doesn't really like sardines. But yesterday morning when the Adventist mom yielded to her hunger and shared a tin with her son, they got something extra — shrimps.

According to Ellis, she was still hungry after eating breakfast so she sent her young son to a nearby shop to purchase chicken sausages, reminding him to read the label as, in keeping with her religion, she does not eat pork.

When he returned from the shop he told her that they did not have any of the sausages that they eat, so he bought a tin of sardines instead.

He cut the sardine tin, poured some out into his plate at which point he told her that he saw 'janga' (cray fish or shrimp) in his plate. She said she ignored him, but when she started placing the rest of the sardines in her plate to enjoy her meal of rice, pear and sardines she, too, found that it was mixed with shrimp, which, she explains, Adventists do not eat.

Obviously disappointed, Ellis says she went to the shop where the product was purchased and reported the find. She also called the Consumer Affairs Commission which, she says, told her to call the local distributors of the brand of sardines.

She called the company, which asked her for the batch number then told her they would get back in touch with her.

@ Sean H, thats not the issue, the lady does not eat shrimp and she didn't purchase shrimp. Digestion is also a word to get familiar with.
Whether or not fish ate pig persons purchasing fish do not expect to get any form of the pork in it.

Years ago my wife ate sardines, and had a reaction, I descovered that shrimps were present in the belly of the fish. Do most Jamaicans know that the belly or gut of these thin fish are intacted? I normally remove them before serving, but if the person is allergic to crustaceans and they are present, there's going to be a reaction.Years ago my wife ate sardines, and had a reaction; I discovered that shrimps were present in the belly of the fish. Do adventists realize that fish eat shrimp, krill & squid? I am curious to know if it is OK to dine on something which eats daily the very things that you should not dine on.
Jay Brown - point taken. Processors must take the necessary steps to ensure that cross contamination does not occur. This is especially important when processing nuts.

JG, you are too funny! Seriously, though, The Observer should have done a bit more investigation to identify the batch number and brand of sardines to apprise the public. After all, we expect you to do more than sensationalize. Shrimp allergies can lead to death for those who are allergic to it, so this could have serious ramifications.

I just opened a tin and found small shrimps alongside the sardines. This is clearly not an isolated incident.

I opened a tin of sardine last week Wednesday and I found about 6 baby shrimp inside too. I did not report it to the authorities but I told friends about it

This is dangerous - shrimp can kill you if you have an allergic reaction to that product.
