Smoke clears, schools reopen
Monday, February 13, 2012
SCHOOLS in sections of the Corporate Area and St Catherine that were forced to close last Friday when smoke from the Riverton City Landfill overwhelmed staff and students, have been given the all-clear to reopen today.
The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) along with the Ministry of Education advised late yesterday that all schools which were affected by the billowing clouds of smoke emanating from the huge fire at the site can now reopen according to normal schedules.
ODPEM and the National Solid Waste Management Authority said that all fires at the landfill have been extinguished ahead of the deadline.
The disaster management agency said the ground command operations have now moved into phase two, which is the further cooling, complete abatement of the smoke nuisance and the full restoration of operations.
More than two dozen schools in the area were closed Friday due to the acrid smoke.
