Smoke from dump not affecting Tinson Pen flights
Jamaica Observer
Friday, February 10, 2012
DESPITE a serious smoke hazard flights are still in operation at the Tinson Pen aerodrome this morning.
Earlier this morning the runway was totally blanketed by smoke from the smouldering fire at the Riverton City landfill nearby, but airport manager Clayton Reid told the Observer that the thick smoke was not affecting operations at the facility.
"Yes flights are still landing and taking off. Visibility has to be poor for miles out for it to affect the pilots. They can communicate in other ways as they operate on one frequency," Reid said.
His claim was verified by air traffic controller at Tinson Pen, Venice Edwards.
"Yes they can. It is an open aerodrome. If they can see they can take off or land. It is totally the pilots decision and the smoke has been clearing up now," Edwards said.
Smoke from the dump which has been burning since Tuesday and is causing respiratory problems for many residents of the Corporate Area and Portmore in st Catherine.
